Testing your safety switch

Testing your safety switch

12 March 2026

A safety switch only protects you if it works. Testing one takes a minute, and you should do it every three months.

How to test it

Tell everyone in the house the power is going off for a moment.

  1. Open the switchboard and find the switches marked with a T or Test button.
  2. Press the test button. The switch should drop straight away.
  3. Push the switch back up to reset it.
  4. Reset any clocks that lost power.

If it does not trip

Do not keep pressing it. Call an electrician, because the circuits behind it are not protected until it is fixed.
